NUTS_Lookup.swfNUTS: Territorial units for Statistical
Purpose
The European
Union has divided up Europe into territorial units for statistical purposes.
These divisions are also helpful for the European Missions Research Group.
They help us as we look at the geographical areas of Europe. These units
are called NUTS. For an English speaker it sounds odd...nuts. However it
comes from French: "Nomenclature des Unités Territoriales Statistiques."
The NUTS nomenclature serves as a reference:
for the collection, development and
harmonization of Community regional statistics
for the socio-economic analyses of
the regions
for the framing of Community
regional policies
The grouping
of European areas into NUTS favors institutional breakdowns and regional units
of a general character. The grouping together of these units at each NUTS
level will enable us to compare "apples with apples and oranges with oranges"
or, if you will, "walnuts with walnuts and pistachios with pistachios."
Each European country is broken down into four levels.
The NUTS
Regulation lays down the following minimum and maximum thresholds for the
average size of the NUTS regions.
Level
Minimum
Maximum
NUTS 1
3 million
7 million
NUTS 2
800 000
3 million
NUTS 3
150 000
800 000
So, here is a lookup program for NUTS.
